Australia is all but guaranteed to hold the 2026 edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on home soil.

On Friday, Football Australia was officially recommended as the host association for the tournament at an AFC Women’s Football Committee meeting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The AFC still need to perform a final ratification of the bid in May, but with Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan having already withdrawn their interest, there are next to no obstacles in the way.

Uzbekistan, meanwhile, were recommended to host the 2029 tournament.

Australia recommended as host for AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2026

Off the back of a successful FIFA Women’s World Cup in the country, it is no major surprise to see Australia putting their hands up to host another tournament.

AFC Chairperson Kanya Keomany believes more memories will be made Down Under in 2026.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup that was co-hosted in Australia last year set new benchmarks and is widely regarded as the best edition in history, showcasing once again the strength of women’s football in Asia,” she said.

“Australia presents the opportunities to build on the commercial appeal of the competition and engage with more fans than ever before, so I am confident that Football Australia will stage a memorable spectacle that will not only elevate the women’s game but also set the standard for future editions of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.”

The Women’s Asian Cup has been held in Australia once before, with Adelaide hosting the tournament in 2006.

China beat the Matildas on penalties that year to lift the trophy.

When is the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026?

Specific dates have not been announced for the 2026 tournament.

In 2022, matches were played from January 20 to February 6.

Who won the last AFC Women’s Asian Cup?

China are the reigning AFC Women’s Asian Cup winners, taking out the 2022 tournament in India.

They beat South Korea 3-2 in the final, courtesy of a late Xiao Yuyi winner.
