Last week, India defeated England in the second Test of their five-match series in Visakhapatnam, to level the series after the visitors had taken the lead by winning in Hyderabad.

An extended break between the second and third Tests has allowed both sides to recuperate, and brought about some changes in the squad composition, especially for India. The BCCI announced the squad for the final three Tests on Saturday.

Notably, Virat Kohli was left out, as his leave on personal grounds has been extended. In addition, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja returned to the squad during their recovery from injury, while batter Shreyas Iyer was dropped.

Was Shreyas Iyer dropped by India for the final three Tests against England?

Earlier this week, several reports emerged stating that Iyer had complained of back stiffness and groin pain in the days following the second Test. However, new information after the announcement of the squad for the last three Tests claimed that he had been cleared for selection afterwards.

Despite this, Iyer was left out of the squad. His recent performances with the bat in Test cricket have been underwhelming, both on the South Africa tour in December and the ongoing England series. Many have also noted that the timing of the injury is convenient, as it allows India to drop the player without officially confirming so.

Iyer has struggled with back issues ever since his slipped disc injury in early 2023. Whether flare-ups of the injury are hindering his form is not yet known, but is a possibility. Either way, allowing him some time off to work on his game and fitness is not a bad option from an Indian perspective.

Uncapped batter Sarfaraz Khan retained his place in the India squad, and could potentially debut in the third Test if KL Rahul does not return from injury by then.
