In a bid to combat plastic pollution plaguing its rivers and coasts, the Tamil Nadu government is setting its sights on innovative technology from the Netherlands, reports The Times of India. As part of the ambitious Rs 1,675 crore Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission, the state environment department is partnering with The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit organisation, to deploy their cutting-edge plastic trash interceptors in 14 coastal districts, including Chennai.

These interceptors are no ordinary contraptions. Imagine two booms strategically placed across a river — one upstream and one downstream. The upstream boom acts as a shield, capturing the majority of the plastic debris carried by the current. The downstream boom takes advantage of the built-up pressure to trap any remaining plastic, even during the fury of extreme floods. This ingenious design ensures rapid accumulation of plastic waste, making it easier for collection.

Once the plastic accumulates, trusty excavators swing into action, scooping up the captured trash and transporting it to the shore for proper disposal and recycling. This closed-loop system promises not only to clean up the rivers but also to give plastic a new lease on life, potentially turning it into valuable resources.

State environment secretary Supriya Sahu is optimistic about the potential of this technology. In a recent social media statement, she commented: “Plastic trash interceptor could be a very effective intervention to prevent plastic getting into our rivers and oceans. We will work on several initiatives like plastic trash interceptors to prevent plastic pollution.”

The Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission is a comprehensive five-year initiative aimed at revitalizing the state’s 1,076 km coastline. The plastic trash interceptor project is just one of the many facets of this ambitious program, which also focuses on enhancing coastal biodiversity, strengthening coastal protection, and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities.

With its innovative approach and commitment to sustainability, the Tamil Nadu government is setting a commendable example in the fight against plastic pollution. The success of this project could pave the way for wider adoption of this technology, not just in India but across the globe. The future of our rivers and oceans might just depend on it.
