Jio, at the forefront of introducing 5G services in India, has recommended the discontinuation of 2G and 3G services in the country. The telecom giant expressed this viewpoint in response to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) consultation paper titled ‘Digital Transformation through 5G Ecosystem.’ Endorsing the move, Vodafone-Idea (Vi) also supports the transition of users to advanced 4G and 5G networks.

In September 2023, TRAI released a report emphasizing the advantages of 5G networks. In reaction to this report, Jio urged the government to formulate a policy and roadmap for phasing out 2G and 3G networks.

Reliance Jio has called for the need for a government policy to shut down 2G/3G in India.

This strategic move aims to curtail unnecessary network expenses for telecom operators and facilitate users in migrating to the latest and more efficient 4G and 5G networks.

While Jio doesn’t currently operate 2G services, commencing its services directly on a 4G network in 2016, it remains the largest telecom operator in India. From the customer’s standpoint, the discontinuation of 2G and 3G services might pose short-term challenges, particularly for users in rural areas. However, the transition ensures users are upgraded to at least 4G, promising superior internet speeds, voice quality, and overall performance. This move aligns with Jio’s commitment to advancing digitization, particularly in areas of India where feature phones with limited internet connectivity are still prevalent.
