Rephrase the title:Is Ravindra Jadeja India’s crisis man in Tests? Instances when the all-rounder has rescued India with the bat

There’s a reason why Ravindra Jadeja is the top-ranked all-rounder in Tests in the world, with the 35-year-old saving India in a crucial stand with skipper Rohit Sharma in the ongoing Test against England in Rajkot.

India and England headed into the third Test with the scoreline level at 1-1. The visitors sprung a surprise by winning the series opener in Hyderabad by 28 runs, only for the hosts to bounce back in style in Visakhapatnam by registering a 106-run win.

In the ongoing third Test, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. It seemed to be a good toss to win, given that the pitch at Rajkot is one of the most batting-friendly decks in the country.

However, the relief of winning the toss quickly turned into regret as India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rajat Patidar all within the first hour of the morning session.

With India reeling at 33-3, and the team handing debuts to Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, Jadeja moved up the order in an attempt to resurrect the innings with Rohit.

The duo stitched a formidable 204-run partnership for the 4th wicket as Rohit brought up his 11th Test century.

Then, he raised 77 runs for the 5th wicket with debutant Sarfaraz Khan, who was mightily impressive in his 66-ball 62-run knock, unfortunately cut short by a run out.

Not long after the run out, though, Jadeja brought up his fourth hundred in Test cricket, with sights now set on helping India post a total above 400.

The Sporting News takes a look at the instances where Jadeja came in and saved the day for India in Test cricket.

110*(212) vs England in Rajkot, 2024

India won the toss and opted to bat first, but the decision backfired as England reduced India to 33-3 within the first hour of play.

With two debutants in the playing XI – Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel – Jadeja was sent ahead of the duo at No.5 to help India steady the ship after Mark Wood and Tom Hartley had rocked the hosts.

Jadeja stitched a memorable 204-run partnership with Rohit, who scored 131, as India ended Day 1 of the ongoing Test at 326-5.

The 35-year-old, playing in front of his home crowd, remained unbeaten on 110 at the close of play. It has been a remarkable innings from Jadeja, who just returned to the setup following an injury.

90(170) vs England in Mohali, 2016

In the third Test of the India-England Test series in 2016, which was played at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, Jadeja produced a game-changing knock in the 1st innings.

After batting first, England posted 283 runs on the board, thanks to a fluent 89 from Jonny Bairstow and crucial cameos from Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Chris Woakes.

In reply, India were in a good position until Virat Kohli was dismissed on 62, with India in a spot of bother at 204-6, 79 runs behind England’s 1st innings total.

With all the recognised batsmen back into the hut, Jadeja produced a masterful innings as he scored 90 runs off 170 balls, raising valuable stands with Ravichandran Ashwin and Jayant Yadav as India put on 417 runs in the 1st innings.

Ultimately, India won the match by 8 wickets and Jadeja was awarded the Man of the Match award for his performances.

68(57) vs England at Lord’s, 2014

While the heroes of India’s historic Test win at Lord’s in 2014 were Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, there was another hero whose performance went unnoticed.

Batting first, India were all out of 295 and were trailing by 24 runs heading into the 2nd innings after England could manage only 319 runs in their 1st innings.

However, having to overcome a lead in an overseas Test, especially in SENA countries, has often proved to be a psychological disadvantage for India.

In India’s 2nd innings, openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan gave the team a good start, with the visitors cruising at 118-1.

However, timely intervals saw England reduce India to 203-6, with MS Dhoni and Stuart Binny returning to the pavilion in quick succession.

India were leading only by 179 runs, and with the tail exposed, the odds were in England’s favour. Only for Jadeja to thwart them with a powerful jab.

Jadeja scored 68 runs in a highly aggressive manner as he faced just 57 balls in his innings. But that was enough as India added another 139 runs to set England a target of 319.

India registered a famous win, thanks to Ishant’s 7-wicket haul, but it couldn’t have been possible without Jadeja’s efforts with the bat in the 2nd innings.
