India has upped its development assistance to the Maldives by 50%, earmarking ₹600 crore in this year’s interim budget, a boost from the ₹400 crore allocated last year. However, the actual spend in the previous year was ₹770 crore, revealing a 22% dip in India’s development assistance to the Maldives this year. India deploys various tools for developmental cooperation with foreign nations, including grant-in-aid, line of credit, capacity building, and technical assistance. Relations between India and the Maldives have strained under President Mohamed Muizzu, who appears to be favoring closer ties with China. Recent diplomatic clashes and derogatory comments by some Maldivian leaders about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lakshadweep visit have added tension. Self-acclaimed Twitter foreign policy experts added fuel to the fire and it was a recipe for more political mileage for the center with Lakshadweep on pedestal. Bollywood celebs, sports stars, and other influencers rallied for the Indian island over the Maldives. Some even hid their Maldives stories to promote Lakshadweep, while a few passed off Maldives pictures as Lakshadweep.

Despite being the top tourist group in December 2023, Indian tourist numbers to the Maldives have waned since the row. In response, the Indian government is pushing Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist hotspot, pledging significant investments in the country’s tourism sector, as highlighted in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s interim Budget 2024 speech. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has received a total allocation of ₹22,154 crore for 2024–25, a boost from ₹18,050 crore last year. Adhering to India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, the largest aid share goes to Bhutan, securing ₹2,068 crore, a drop from ₹2,400 crore in 2023–24. Meanwhile, here’s how the internet reacted to the news after all the boycott jingoism!
