Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann is on the verge of making history as he closes in on becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in the 2023/24 season. The 32-year-old forward scored a goal against Villarreal, which made him join the club’s second-highest scorer of all time. Additionally, he scored a sensational header in the match against Mallorca, marking his 170th career goal for Atletico Madrid since joining the club in 2014.
Griezmann is just three goals shy of surpassing club legend Luis Aragones, who currently holds the top spot as Atletico Madrid’s all-time top scorer. Aragones scored 173 goals for the club during his playing career between 1964 and 1974. Griezmann’s 170 goals have come in various competitions, including La Liga, UEFA Champions League, Copa del Rey, and the Europa League.
After his goal against Mallorca, Griezmann overtook Adrian Escudero as Atletico Madrid’s second-highest scorer of all time. Escudero played for Atleti between 1945 and 1948. Even though Griezmann has made significant strides in closing the gap to the top spot, it remains to be seen whether he will surpass Aragones’ extraordinary career both on and off the pitch.
Outside of his club achievements, Griezmann has also made a mark on the international stage, with 44 goals in 126 appearances for the French national team. He made his senior debut for France in 2014 and had a standout performance at the 2018 World Cup, where he scored four goals, including one in the final against Croatia.
Atletico Madrid currently has Griezmann under contract until June 2026, paying him a gross salary of around $13.7 million per year. Despite this, there have been rumors of interest from other clubs, including Manchester United, who reportedly made a surprise move for the prolific forward during the November international break. According to reports, United officials had discussions with Griezmann’s representatives with the intention of offering him a significant weekly salary.
