Bloomberg reported that Apple is engaged in discussions with Google regarding the integration of Google’s Gemini AI into the iPhone. This move could mark a significant development, potentially altering the landscape of iPhone software features. The talks suggest that Apple is actively negotiating with Google to license Gemini, a suite of generative AI models.

If successful, this partnership would not only signify an expansion of the existing search collaboration between the two tech giants but also pave the way for innovative advancements within iPhone functionality.

Additionally, discussions have also taken place regarding a similar deal with OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT. However, specifics regarding the terms, branding, and implementation of the AI agreement are yet to be finalized.

According to Apple analyst Mark Gurman, such a move could provide Google with a significant advantage, potentially reaching billions of users, but it may also draw further antitrust scrutiny for both companies. Furthermore, it suggests that Apple’s progress in AI development may not be as advanced as previously thought.

While Apple has been working on its own AI models, codenamed Ajax, since early last year, sources indicate that its technology still lags behind competitors like Google. Consequently, Apple is exploring partnerships to handle the computational demands of generative AI, focusing on features that operate directly on its devices rather than relying on cloud-based solutions.
