In a remarkable twist, recent research suggests that alien dinosaurs may not just be the stuff of science fiction, but could actually exist on other planets. The study, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, urges scientists to consider these possibilities in the search for extraterrestrial life.
The researchers point to the high levels of oxygen present during the dinosaur era, reaching 30% compared to the current 21%. This abundance of oxygen is believed to have contributed to the massive size of many prehistoric creatures, including dragonflies with wingspans of 2.5 feet. As the Earth’s species evolved, various other compounds may have become less abundant or disappeared.
Building on these geological shifts, the researchers advocate for examining planets with similar oxygen levels, as well as expanding the search to include other “extinct” compounds. By doing so, the study suggests that our chances of discovering planets capable of harboring life, even large and complex lifeforms akin to the dinosaurs, would be enhanced.
In particular, the researchers emphasize the importance of looking for signs of a Phanerozoic stage – the eon spanning the past 541 million years, when animal and plant life flourished on Earth. Lead author Rebecca Payne highlights the significance of this stage, stating that it “encompasses nearly all of the time when life was more complex than microbes and sponges.”
This research challenges the perspective that life beyond Earth must be as advanced as our current civilization. Instead, it suggests that life in the cosmos could still be in a stage comparable to that of our dinosaur-inhabited past. Therefore, the search for extraterrestrial life should factor in the possibility of alien dinosaurs and other less advanced forms of life. With this new perspective, the quest for life beyond Earth takes on an even more fascinating dimension.
