Researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Hollings Cancer Center and Cincinnati Children’s have achieved a groundbreaking development in the creation of miniature 3D human colons enriched with immune cells, which has significant implications for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and cancer. The team led by MUSC researcher Jorge Munera, PhD, in collaboration with James Wells, PhD, and Daniel Kechele, PhD, from Cincinnati Children’s, has refined the model for studying diseased colons by adding an immune system to the miniature organs, setting it apart from traditional organoids.
Given that many gastrointestinal diseases involve the immune system and inflammation, Munera emphasized the relevance and potential of this new model for gastrointestinal diseases, which goes beyond the limitations presented by traditional cancer studies and animal models. Furthermore, the researchers addressed a notable limitation of colon organoids by inducing them to develop early-stage immune cell types present in colon tissue, showcasing the potential adaptability of stem cells capable of evolving into diverse cell types required by the body.
The findings of the study were published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, underlining the potential of this innovative organoid model to open avenues for personalized treatments tailored to address colon diseases, which could lead to a more tailored and effective approach to addressing colon-related ailments. These findings represent a significant step forward in the study of gastrointestinal diseases, offering a promising avenue for advanced research and potential therapeutic interventions in the future.
