Apple is set to make significant changes to its AirPods lineup, with new versions of the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 expected to be released in the next couple of years. However, it seems that the AirPods Max 2 will not undergo major updates. According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to officially introduce the AirPods Max 2 in late 2024. The AirPods 4 is also scheduled for a late 2024 release, although it is unclear if these devices will be launched simultaneously or on different dates.
While the AirPods Max 2 will not see significant alterations, it is expected to come with a USB Type-C port and introduce new color options. Gurman’s report suggests that these changes demonstrate Apple’s commitment to the product, despite its last update in 2020.
This implies that the AirPods Max 2 may still use Apple’s older H1 chip, which was introduced in 2019, while the more advanced H2 chipset was adopted in the Apple AirPods Pro 2 in September 2022, offering improved features such as adaptive transparency mode, better active noise cancellation, and longer battery life. The shift to a USB Type-C port in the AirPods Max 2 aligns with Apple’s transition from its proprietary Lightning charging solution to USB Type-C, which began with the iPhone 15 series in September of this year. The AirPods 4 is expected to be released in late 2024, offering two variants. The AirPods Pro 3, on the other hand, is projected to debut in 2025 with an upgraded chip and design. It may also incorporate health monitoring features for hearing and body temperature.
