A cyclonic storm is expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around December 3, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has not indicated the possible impact on Odisha, stating that the impact will only be assessed after the formation of a depression in the sea on Friday.
IMD scientist Umashankar Dash stated, “The path of the possible cyclone and other parameters could be estimated only after formation of the depression. Therefore, we have not told anything on the impact on Odisha or any other place in the coast.”
The IMD reiterated that there is no warning for the Odisha coast for the next four days and no warning for fishermen in the area.
The IMD’s special bulletin on Wednesday reported that a well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. It is expected to further intensify into a cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of Bengal around December 3, and move north-westwards reaching the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh around December 4.
The IMD also noted that squally wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are likely over the Southwest Bay of Bengal from December 1 morning, and 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph from December 2 morning.
