Honeywell presents groundbreaking solution for tackling EV battery fires

Posted on October 30, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Honeywell, the US-based consumer technology company, announced on Monday that it has developed innovative solutions to address safety concerns in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and usage sector.

One of Honeywell’s key contributions is the creation of lithium-ion battery safety sensors, which play a critical role in detecting potential battery fires and thereby protecting drivers. “With over 10 million EVs sold worldwide last year, we recognize their pivotal role in realizing the future of sustainable travel,” stated Sarah Martin, President of Honeywell Sensing & Safety Technologies.

The EV market in India, in particular, is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49% from 2022 to 2030. In line with this growing trend, electric scooter usage is also on the rise. In fact, more than half of India’s three-wheeler vehicle registrations last year were electric, and electric two-wheelers are projected to reach $6.1 billion by 2030, with a growth rate of 27.3%.

Considering this significant market potential, Ashish Modi, President of Honeywell India, expressed the company’s commitment to driving the electric mobility revolution in the country. “As leaders in EV and scooter battery safety, we aim to enhance safety standards, offer innovative ready-now solutions, and assist our customers in navigating the challenges of the rapidly-evolving electric vehicle market,” Modi stated.

Honeywell’s battery safety sensors, when integrated into EV and scooter battery packs, effectively identify thermal runaway risks. By enabling the early warning of passengers and assisting EV and scooter manufacturers in meeting international battery fire safety standards, these sensors play a crucial role in ensuring overall safety.

Through a strategic alliance with Nexceris, a developer of lithium-ion gas detection solutions, Honeywell is further working on the development of sensors that can detect early indicators of thermal runaway in EV and scooter batteries. This proactive approach can help prevent costly property damage and, more importantly, injuries to drivers.

Additionally, Honeywell provides a range of electrical safety gear, portable and fixed gas detection technologies, and personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, face shields, and dielectric boots. These products are specifically designed to address high-risk areas such as electrode mixing, coating, drying, and cell finishing.

As Honeywell continues to prioritize safety in the EV sector, the company aims to position itself as a leader in battery safety and contribute to the advancement of the electric mobility industry.
