CDC Warns Against Consuming Cantaloupe Products Amid Salmonella Outbreak
US food safety officials recently issued a warning advising consumers to avoid consuming specific cantaloupe products due to a growing outbreak of salmonella infections. The outbreak has been linked to Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupes and has seen a significant increase in reported infections over the past two weeks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disclosed the outbreak, revealing that at least 117 individuals across 34 states in the US have fallen ill due to the bacteria. Out of these cases, 61 resulted in hospitalization, and two fatalities have been reported.
The outbreak has also affected Canada, with 63 confirmed cases across five provinces, leading to 17 hospitalizations and one fatality. Health officials in Canada have expanded their recall notice to include certain types of pineapples, watermelons, and honeydew melons that may have undergone processing alongside the recalled cantaloupe.
The CDC strongly advises against consuming cantaloupe or cantaloupe products associated with the Malichita or Rudy brands, especially those with a sticker bearing the number “4050” or indicating “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique.”
Multiple companies have initiated recalls of pre-cut cantaloupe products and fruit medleys due to potential exposure to Malichita or Rudy cantaloupes. Notable recalls include products from Kwik Trip, Freshness Guaranteed, RaceTrac, Vinyard, Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, ALDI, and Bix Produce.
Consumers are urged to stay informed about these recalls and avoid consumption of cantaloupe products associated with the identified brands during this critical period. The public is advised to refer to the CDC and FDA for further updates on the situation.
