Bedi is survived by his wife Anju, actor-son Angad, and daughter Neha.

Born in Amritsar in 1946, Bedi represented India in 67 Tests, claiming 266 wickets with notable achievements including 14 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul. He captained the Indian cricket team for almost four years in Test cricket from 1975 to 1979, succeeding Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.
