Basit Ali criticizes Imam-ul-Haq for Pakistan’s defeat to Afghanistan, questioning how individuals focused on personal performance can achieve success with sixes.

Posted on October 24, 2023 By Haley Bennett

In a stunning turn of events, Pakistan faced a surprising defeat at the hands of Afghanistan in their fifth match of the 2023 World Cup, held in Chennai on Monday. Despite Pakistan’s score of 282/7 while batting first, courtesy of impressive performances by captain Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, and Iftikhar Ahmed, Afghanistan executed a mature and effective batting display to secure victory with 8 wickets to spare.

While the cricketing community reacted strongly to this unexpected outcome, prior to the loss, there were some noteworthy remarks made. Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq, during his pre-match press conference, was questioned about the team’s inability to hit a single six during the first Powerplay of ODI matches in 2023. In a playful response, Imam suggested that perhaps the players should consume more protein instead of carbohydrates.

Former Pakistani batter Basit Ali took the opportunity to address Imam’s comments on a news show before the match. Ali expressed his opinion, stating, “There is no talent to hit sixes. How will they hit them? You need heart to hit sixes. Those who play with the fear of getting out cannot hit sixes. You need to take a chance, right? For what? For your country, for your team. Those who play for themselves, how will they hit sixes?”

Interestingly, during the Pakistan versus Afghanistan match, two sixes were indeed hit during Pakistan’s batting Powerplay, but both came from the bat of Imam’s opening partner, Abdullah Shafique.

In other World Cup news, the top five favorites for the 2023 World Cup title are India, Australia, and South Africa, according to Dafabet odds. The current odds are as follows:
