Apple’s highly anticipated self-driving car may not be launched until later in the decade, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This revelation follows tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s uncertainty about the progress of the Apple Car project. Gurman adds that the development of the car is still far from complete.
The project, originally known as ‘Project Titan,’ was initiated by Apple in 2014 to create a self-driving electric car.
In a tweet, Gurman mentions Apple’s major shift towards mixed reality and electric cars. He states that Apple’s Vision Pro headset will debut in early 2024, followed by the Apple Car before 2030. He also highlights Kuo’s prediction of team restructuring within Apple.
While Kuo had previously suggested that the Apple Car might not enter mass production in the coming years without an acquisition strategy, Gurman goes further, stating that Apple doesn’t expect to ship anything until later in the decade. He compares the development timelines of Apple’s successful products, such as the iPad, iPhone, and iPad, which took six years, three years, and one-and-a-half years respectively. In contrast, Apple’s self-driving car project has been in progress for nine years.
Apple’s mixed-reality headset, another groundbreaking venture, has also undergone approximately six years of development. The company recently revealed its first-generation mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, with plans to release it to consumers in early 2024.
Last year in March, Kuo reported that the Apple Car team had been disbanded for a significant period, potentially affecting the mass marketing of the vehicle by 2025.
