Apple and Google Unveil Their ‘App of the Year’ and it’s Not ChatGPT As Expected

Posted on November 30, 2023February 17, 2026 By Corey Powell

Apple and Google have announced their top app and game picks of the year, focusing on innovation, user experience, and design. Despite their impressive success, the AI app ChatGPT was not named app of the year by either tech giant.

Apple’s App Store Awards highlighted 14 apps and games, with AllTrails securing the iPhone App of the Year title and Honkai: Star Rail emerging as the Game of the Year for both platforms, as reported by TechCrunch. Apple’s recognition also included apps like Prêt-à-Makeup, Photomator, MUBI, and SmartGym across various categories.

Google Play’s Best of 2023 Awards introduced categories such as “Best with AI” and “Best Game for Good” to acknowledge technological advancements and positive impact. Notably, Imprint: Learn Visually was named the best app, while categories like Best Multi-Device App and Best Multi-Device Game were introduced to honor apps offering a seamless experience across various platforms. Spotify, OUTERPLANE-Strategy Anime, ChatGPT, and MONOPOLY GO! were also recognized in different categories.

Both tech giants’ selections were based on technical innovation, user experience, and design. Despite the absence of ChatGPT from their top picks, the app continues to enjoy widespread popularity and impact, reflected in its recognition as the users’ choice app. Apple and Google’s announcements reflect the evolving landscape of app and game development, with a focus on empowering users and leveraging cutting-edge technology.
