Senior cabin crew members of Tata-owned Air India Express (AIX) have sounded the alarm over alleged violations of the company’s code of conduct and have called for the intervention of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry.
A group of senior staff have alleged that they are experiencing mental harassment and sudden reductions in their contracts, casting doubt on the airline’s management practices.
In an open letter to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the AIX employees union disclosed that the latest employment letter from management prohibits cabin crew members from engaging in any trade union activities. The union claims that this decision is intended to dismantle unity and obstruct union work under the Air India Express Employees Union, registered under BMS.
The letter further contends that the contracts of four cabin crew members were not recommended for renewal without any valid justification, despite them meeting all criteria set by management. In addition, the union alleged that the HR team, headed by Anjali Chatterjee, reduced the tenure of nine cabin crew contracts from five years to one, while other crew members received three years without reasonable explanation.
The union also accused the company’s assessment team, led by Megha Singhania, of harassing and commenting on the appearance, language, and performance of female crew members, including questioning the ability of mothers returning from maternity leave, creating mental stress that may affect passenger safety.
Moreover, the union alleged “unethical” practices within the organization, including the manipulation of height measurements to impact BMI calculations for contract renewals.
The letter highlighted a distressing incident involving a cabin crew member who sustained a spinal injury on duty and is now facing life in a wheelchair. The employee’s contract termination without considering suitable work for their limited abilities raised concerns about discrimination and lack of equal employment opportunities.
The union also raised concerns about irregularities in recruitment and promotions overseen by COO Pushpinder Singh, alleging favoritism and monopolistic practices within the organization.
Despite several attempts, the union claims they have been denied the opportunity to discuss these concerns with CEO Aloke Singh, stressing the urgency of addressing these issues to uphold fairness and ethical conduct within the organization.
