Study finds that consumers are more ready for automated vehicle delivery than drones and robots.

Posted on November 12, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Title: Study Shows Consumers Favor Automated Vehicle Over Drones and Robots for Delivery Services

A recent study conducted by Northwestern University’s Mobility and Behavior Lab reports that consumers are more willing to embrace automated vehicles for delivery services than drones and robots, as reported by TechXplore. This finding comes at a time when companies like Amazon and Walmart are heavily investing in drone delivery services, revealing a complex relationship between consumer behavior and the acceptance of near-future technologies for automated parcel delivery.

Led by Amanda Stathopoulos, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, the study, titled “Robots at your doorstep: Acceptance of near-future technologies for automated parcel delivery,” aimed to understand public perceptions of the potential replacement of traditional delivery drivers by automated vehicles, drones, and robots. The research found that while consumers showed a greater readiness to accept automated vehicles as substitutes for human delivery personnel, they expressed less willingness to embrace drones and robots. Interestingly, the study found that the acceptance of these technologies increased as delivery speed improved and prices decreased. Additionally, it was revealed that tech-savvy consumers were more accepting of these near-future technologies compared to those less familiar with the advancements.

However, the study also highlighted a paradox by emphasizing the challenge of reconciling the convenience of fast and efficient delivery with its potential consequences, such as poor labor conditions and environmental impact. The researchers emphasized the need for a more strategic approach to city planning and design, arguing that shipping and logistics centers should be prioritized in urban planning to recognize their significance in enhancing the overall quality of life.

The findings of the study, published in Scientific Reports, suggest that while new delivery modes present exciting opportunities, societal acceptance is still evolving. As companies intensify efforts to incorporate drone deliveries, the researchers caution that a lack of public acceptance could pose significant challenges to the success of these innovations. Paving the way for more strategic preparation in the future, the study encourages active listening and frequent assessments of user acceptance to alleviate concerns and reluctance toward adopting new delivery technologies.

The research brings to light the complexities surrounding the societal acceptance of automated vehicles, drones, and robots for delivery services, providing valuable insights for companies and policymakers looking to integrate these technologies into their operations.
