World’s Oldest Pyramid Constructed by Humans Possibly Found in Indonesia, Archaeologists Suggest

Posted on November 7, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Gunung Padang in Indonesia confirmed as the world’s oldest pyramid

Indonesia’s Gunung Padang, situated on top of an extinct volcano in West Java, has been confirmed as the oldest known pyramid in the world. The site has been subject to debate over its origin, with questions raised about whether it was a natural formation or a man-made structure. However, a team of researchers in Indonesia has now presented compelling evidence supporting the theory that Gunung Padang was predominantly crafted by human hands.

The research team, made up of archaeologists, geologists, geophysicists, and paleontologists from multiple institutions in Indonesia, conducted an extensive scientific examination of Gunung Padang between 2011 and 2015. They used advanced techniques such as seismic tomography, electrical resistivity tomography, and ground-penetrating radar. Core samples were also obtained through drilling, allowing for radiocarbon dating to determine the ages of different layers within the structure.

The comprehensive analysis led the researchers to conclude that Gunung Padang was primarily constructed by humans. The construction occurred in several distinct phases over thousands of years. The oldest segments of the structure, dating back 25,000 to 14,000 years ago, establish Gunung Padang as the oldest recognized pyramid globally.

The evolution of the structure involved successive human endeavors. Initially, the summit of the dormant volcano was adorned with sculpted lava. Subsequently, between 7900 and 6100 BCE, a layer of bricks and rock columns was added. At a later date, some of the earlier work was concealed with a layer of soil. Between 2000 and 1100 BCE, stone terracing was incorporated to further enhance the structure.

The research team also discovered indications of potential hollow spaces within Gunung Padang, suggesting the presence of hidden chambers. They plan to conduct drilling operations and use cameras to explore these areas and document their contents.

The findings of the team have been published in the journal Archaeological Prospection, contributing significantly to the understanding of ancient architectural and engineering capabilities. Gunung Padang stands as a remarkable testament to the engineering prowess of ancient civilizations and sheds light on the sophisticated societies that existed thousands of years ago.

Further research and interdisciplinary investigation are expected to uncover more secrets of Gunung Padang and provide deeper insights into the ancient civilizations that thrived at this enigmatic site.

Overall, this discovery firmly establishes Gunung Padang as the world’s oldest pyramid, outranking other pyramid sites in terms of age and significance.
