Last week, India pulled off a tricky chase at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, securing a 5-wicket win and an unassailable 3-1 lead in their five-Test series against England.

England scored 353 batting first, thanks to Joe Root’s century. In reply, India were struggling at 177/7 before keeper Dhruv Jurel pulled them to 307. India’s spinners then took over, bowling England out for 145 before Jurel and Shubman Gill took India home, chasing 192.

In the absence of several key players, youngsters on both sides impressed at various points during the series.

England’s spin attack in the series comprised of Jack Leach, Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir, with the latter three having a combined experience of one Test match prior to the first match in Hyderabad. To make matters worse, Leach was soon injured.

Hartley had an excellent series, but Shoaib Bashir was the stand-out in the fourth Test. He picked up eight Indian wickets, including five in the first innings, which earned him high praise from former England captain Michael Vaughan. Speaking on the Prairie Fire Podcast, Vaughan said,

One of the great weeks, celebrating another world-class superstar that we’ve unearthed, Shoaib Bashir. That’s what we’re celebrating. Second Test match, eight wickets, he’s the new Ravi Ashwin, and we’ve unearthed him. So, we’re celebrating a new superstar in English cricket.

Vaughan’s comments may have been over the top, but Bashir’s bowling in the series bodes well for England. It will be a while before he achieves the status of Ashwin, who has been a frontline spinner for over a decade now, and recently became just the second Indian to take 500 Test wickets.
