Rephrase the title:’Spirit of cricket?’ – R Ashwin chimes in on the India vs Afghanistan T20I super over row

On Wednesday, India took on Afghanistan in Bengaluru in the final match of their three-game T20I bilateral series, looking to complete a series whitewash.

Electing to bat first, the hosts were rocked early as Fareed Ahmed’s opening spell left them struggling at 22/4, before Rohit Sharma (121*) and Rinku Singh (69*) put on 190 runs to help them score 212/4 at the end of 20 overs.

Afghanistan put up a stern fight, managing to level the scores at the end of their innings, thanks to fifties from Rahmanullah Gurbaz (50), Ibrahim Zadran (50) and Gulbadin Naib (55*). India finally won the match via a second Super Over, after the first one also ended in a tie.

‘Spirit of cricket?’ – R Ashwin chimes in on the India vs Afghanistan T20I super over row

There was some controversy on the last ball of the first Super Over, when Afghanistan batted. Mohammad Nabi missed a wide yorker from Mukesh Kumar, and the batters attempted to run a bye. Keeper Sanju Samson’s throw was wayward, and struck Nabi before deflecting into open space, allowing the batters to sneak in two more runs.

Virat Kohli and India captain Rohit Sharma both objected to the batters taking advantage of the deflection, but the runs were allowed to stand. The act brought up more discussions on the ‘spirit of cricket’, which India cricketer R Ashwin spoke about in his latest YouTube video. He said,

A simple explanation for this will suffice. A bowler is bowling just to pick your wicket. If you hit that ball then you can score a run. When the ball hits the pads, it’s a leg bye. When it doesn’t meet your body, and the keeper leaves it, it is a bye. When the ball goes wide off the crease, it is wide. When the bowler outstretches the leg, it is no-ball.

All these happens when the bowler is trying to take someone’s wicket and the run comes off the delivery. In the same way, when a fielder throws, why do they do it? To get you run out. I am running, that throw deflects off me, I am within my right to run. Spirit of cricket? Yet again, I’m sorry.

There is no law in cricket which prohibits the batters from taking extra runs in such cases. If a batter intentionally deflects the ball, the fielding side can appeal for them to be out obstructing the field, but Nabi did not do so in this case.

Prior to this, the most prominent instance of such an incident had come in the 2019 World Cup final, when England’s Ben Stokes, while coming back for a second run, inadvertently got in the way of a throw from the outfield.

The ball hit his bat and went to the boundary, turning two runs into six and enabling England to take the match to a Super Over, eventually winning on the boundary countback rule.
