Early-round replays have already provided entertainment in this season’s FA Cup, including seventh-tier Horsham forcing Barnsley to visit their modest Sussex home ground after securing a draw in a thriller away to their League One opponents.

Premier League title contenders Liverpool were among the first top-flight clubs to be taken to replays in 2022/23, narrowly seeing off Wolves at the second time of asking in the Third Round.

Championship club Sunderland also threatened to knock out Fulham, taking the lead at Craven Cottage in a 1-1 draw before losing the return match 3-2.

Now that Premier League and second-tier sides have joined the action, will there be replays during the rest of the 2023/24 competition? Here’s what you need to know if your team shares a draw on the road to Wembley.

Are there replays in the FA Cup 2023/24?

The FA has stipulated that there will be mandatory replays for games that end in draws up to and including the Fourth Round in 2023/24.

From the Fifth Round onwards, matches that are tied after 90 minutes will go to a 30-minute period of extra time. If the scores are still level, a penalty shootout will decide the contest.

Fresh changes could lie ahead: widespread reports in October suggested that plans to scrap replays after the Second Round could be introduced as early as the 2024/25 season.

Is there extra time in the FA Cup Third Round?

If a match in the FA Cup Third or Fourth Round ends in a draw, there will be a replay. If that second meeting sees the scores remain level after 90 minutes, there will be a 30-minute period of extra time.

If there is still no winner after that, a penalty shootout will decide which team advances to the next round (or, in the case of the final, wins the trophy). No games went to spot-kicks in those rounds in 2022/23, with Blackburn Rovers’ 100th-minute goal at Birmingham City, courtesy of US international Auston Trusty’s own goal, proving the latest a tie was decided.

Is there extra time in the FA Cup after the Fourth Round?

Managers of teams involved from the Fifth Round might appreciate the absence of replays amid packed schedules, but their teams will still have to play 30 minutes of extra time in games that are not settled over 90 minutes.

The only example of that in 2022/23 was the dramatic semifinal between Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley Stadium, when Erik ten Hag’s side won 7-6 on penalties following a goalless draw.

The FA announced in December 2018 that replays would be removed from the Fifth Round onwards in that campaign’s competition — a season earlier than previously planned.

The Professional Game Board said it had introduced the measure to alleviate fixture congestion, with six Premier League clubs reaching the knockout stage of European competition and a midweek round of Premier League fixtures scheduled for February and March 2019.
