VIDEO: Did Glenn Phillips use saliva on the ball during the Bangladesh vs New Zealand Test match? Is he set to be penalized?

Posted on November 30, 2023February 17, 2026 By Corey Powell

Following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup, Bangladesh and New Zealand were gearing up for a 2-Test series, with the first match scheduled to begin on November 28th in Sylhet.

In the first Test, Bangladesh posted a score of 310 with opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy contributing 86. New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips took 4/53. In response, the visiting team was dismissed for 317, with Kane Williamson leading the way with 104 runs.

At the end of the third day, Bangladesh had taken a 205-run lead, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto undefeated at 104.

During the match, there was a controversy when Glenn Phillips appeared to shine the ball using saliva, which is prohibited under the current guidelines. According to Law 41.3.2.1, only sweat can be used to polish the ball, and no artificial substances are allowed.

While no on-field action was taken at the time, it is likely that 5 penalty runs will be awarded to Bangladesh once the incident is reviewed on television replays. The governing body responsible for the match will also be informed, and they will determine if further action is necessary.

Despite the incident, it is unlikely that Phillips will face additional sanctions, as his actions appeared to be unintentional.
