Malanda Residents Face Financial Crisis Due to $300,000 in Speeding Fines as Mobile Speed Camera Issues $300,000 in Fines Over Two Weeks, Leaving Residents Stunned
Malanda, a small town located 114 km southwest of Cairns in Far North Queensland, is facing what residents describe as an impending financial crisis, allegedly brought about by a single speed camera. According to News.com.au, the mobile speed camera issued nearly $300,000 in fines within a span of two weeks, leaving the town’s approximately 2000 residents in shock.
The residents are now considering legal action to address the unexpected surge in fines during September, which has raised concerns about the financial burden this might impose on the town’s population.
Daily Mail reported that in a community of approximately 2,800 people, residents find themselves astonished at the potential cost they may incur to settle their speeding fines.
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads confirmed the operation of a mobile road safety camera in the region from September 7 to 21. Throughout its operation, the camera identified 342 vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h, with records suggesting a reduction in offenses over the deployment period.
The Guardian also reported that one of the locals raise concerns about the sudden influx of speeding fines, with several affected residents expressing their frustration, including Lana Miller, a local trainee ambulance driver.
She accumulated a staggering nine fines in just five days, all received on the same day, amounting to a substantial $7,000, adding to the growing frustration and financial strain felt by the residents of Malanda. The collective fines for locals have reached an estimated $282,627, as reported by local MP Shane Knuth, with elderly residents fearing the consequences of losing their driver’s licenses due to the surge in speeding tickets.
